Custom or off-the-shelf compound: when each makes sense

A standard grade is faster and cheaper to qualify. A custom compound is worth it when the duty falls between grades. Here is how to tell which side you are on.

When a standard grade is enough

A published grade with a datasheet and a lot record suits you when your fluid, temperature and pressure sit inside the limits shown and you can accept the stated tolerances. You can order small quantities, qualification is quick, and lot-to-lot data is already visible.

Check by entering your requirements on the datasheet page. If a grade meets them, you have a starting point.

When custom is worth it

  • The duty falls between grades. For example cold start-up and a hot, amine-containing fluid in the same seal.
  • Your existing part is the reference. You need the same properties as a seal you already buy and cannot get from the original source.
  • Properties must be tuned together. A little more hardness for decompression resistance, without losing compression set.
  • Volume justifies it. Development has a cost that spreads over the lots you will buy.

What custom costs you and us

You pay in time: candidates, lab samples, test data, then batch supply. Our five tracked stages show where a requirement stands at any point, and the Track page gives you a live view.

A fair middle route

Start from a published grade and change only what you must. Our request form accepts a grade ID and lets you edit the properties. Fewer changes mean faster qualification.

What to avoid

Do not ask for "the same as brand X" without numbers. Give the limits and test methods, and we compare against them.

Start a requirement and tell us which side of this line you are on.
